PARENTAL ENGAGEMENT IN RAISING ATTAINMENT - A GUIDE FOR PARENTS

The following action points are highly recommended in order to support your child in reaching his/her maximum potential:

  • Ensure that all your contact details (especially email ID and mobile numbers) are up to date at school – virtually all information for parents is now sent by email / or SMS.
  • Please use the student planner and e mails to communicate with teachers
  • Check out the school’s website on a regular basis for important updates and resources. Ensure that you retain any username and password for access.
  • Read the school newsletters posted on the school’s website for information updates
  • Attend relevant orientations and curriculum workshops for parents
  • Discuss your child’s targets at all the Parent / Teacher Consultation Meetings and how you can support progress at home
  • Ensure that your child has an excellent attendance and punctuality record
  • Follow the ‘5 a Day’ family learning plan : ‘TALK LISTEN SHARE GUIDE ENCOURAGE’ – it truly makes a difference to students of all ages
  • Encourage your child to practice his/her handwriting skills – this will reap much benefit
  • Ensure that your child reads daily using a range of material that is age appropriate: fiction, non - fiction, newspapers, journals etc. Talk together about what he/she is reading
  • Try to organize regular visits to your local bookshop and experiment with different authors / genres.
  • Watch and talk together about educational programmes
  • Discuss local and world events age appropriately
  • Strictly limit the amount of time your child spends on social networking sites
  • Establish a visible home learning / study area in the home (beware of ‘studying’ behind a closed door!)
  • Discuss the home learning your child has completed. (A little praise makes a real difference to us all!)
  • Rather than being stressed with end of term assessment revision, plan with your child a simple, weekly revision / enrichment timetable. (Little but often is extremely effective)
  • Ensure that your child completes the summer holiday study programme to ensure progression rather than a dip in attainment
  • Talk about career aspirations age appropriately. Research together on the internet to discover the different types of courses available and the entry grades required
  • For the parents of secondary students , it is vital that you attend options and career fair events together
  • Support your child in maintaining a healthy lifestyle: diet, exercise, regular sleep patterns
  • Please inform the school regarding any health issues / change in circumstances of your child
