On the 16th of January 2010, 15 students from years 9 and 10, visited Turner Construction Limited, Dubai.
The visit was coordinated by Mr. Hakimuddin Gadiwala, the Financial Controller for Turner Construction Limited.
Turner Constructions, is located in the Gulf Towers Building.
Mr. Gadiwala took us to the work office and not the executive office because the executive office is highly furnished with expensive interior, and that’s not what he wanted us to see. He wanted us to do something greater!
He told us that we need to fold our sleeves today. He meant that we were going to be working today!
Mr. Gadiwala had arranged for a beautiful compliment from the company for all of us - a book, pen, highlighter and a Turner keychain. He took us to the conference room where he gave us a brief detail about his company and explained what exactly their company does.
Turner Constructions Limited is a 100 year old company, established since 1902. They are project managers and not contractors. TIME – Turner International Middle East is a branch of Turner in middle-east. They call Turner, Mother Turner because it’s a 100 year old company. They don’t do any job but they get people to do it for them.
We saw 4 offices – that of a Project Manager, Business Development Manager, Financial controller and the Accounts Department. He showed us a few financial reports of the company and also explained to us the contents of a balance sheet, Cash flow and a PNR. In the end he told us the proceedings of an AGM (Annual General Meeting)
The main purpose of this visit was to come out from our theory life to practical life/knowledge. And the most important lesson he taught us today was to have confidence in ourselves and try accepting our mistakes.
We left his Turner Constructions with a sense of fulfillment and hope. I personally think it was a great experience visiting his office and we learnt a lot about accounting and how a company actually works!
